Building materials trade: a yard with a digital overlay

Sound familiar?

  • The stock in the system does not match what is in the yard and on the van.
  • The same item has three numbers: purchasing, sales and the site.
  • Prices and terms live in Excel, not on the item.
  • Orders and invoices from large vendors are still typed in.

01 — Functions

  1. 01

One item for purchase, sale and price

Each item has one number, one unit and one price list. Purchasing, the warehouse and sales work on the same master data.

  2. 02

    Warehouse, van and site

Main warehouse, outside store, vehicle and site are locations. Transfers are posted, not remembered. Stock is right where the goods actually are.

  3. 03

    Demand-driven planning

Order proposals come from minimum stock, open sales orders and what the sites need. Purchasing sees the gap before the customer calls.

  4. 04

    Sales and delivery

Quote, order, delivery note and invoice on one job. Direct delivery from the vendor to the site is standard.

  5. 05

    Prices and terms

Customer prices, scales, discounts and freight sit on the item and the customer. No side list.

  6. 06

    Anvaigo EDI Connect

Where orders, despatch advice and invoices have volume, they run by EDI straight into Business Central. Nobody types documents in.

  7. 07

    Incoming invoices and documents

Continia Document Capture reads incoming invoices, checks them against the order and the receipt, and posts them.

  8. 08

Own use and the building materials trade in one system

Companies that install and also sell issue stock to the site and invoice the customer. Both mean the same quantity.

02 — For these companies

  • Building materials merchants
  • Specialist trade for building services, electrical and fit-out
  • Contractors with their own warehouse and a trade counter
  • Warehouse and logistics companies in construction

03 — Why it fits

  • One stock figure that matches the yard
  • One item master instead of three lists
  • Documents by EDI instead of retyped
  • Standard, not a custom build: Business Central stays underneath and ready for the next update
