Business Central 2026 Release Wave 2 (v29): What Developers and Partners Need to Know

Business Central 2026 release wave 2 (version 29.0) is out. For anyone running or building extensions, it is a release worth planning for, and the upgrade window closes in February 2027.
What Microsoft lists for developers
Update 29.0 brings a long list of development features, all generally available. The ones with the most impact on extension work:
- Run AL tests from the command line and in CI/CD workflows, plus extensible, data-driven AL test suites
- Indexes that span fields from a base table and its table extensions
- Default implementations for AL interfaces, so interfaces can evolve without breaking every implementer
- Page Scripting is now generally available
- Track AL compiler diagnostics in automated builds
Microsoft also lists a range of AI and agent tooling for developers, for example using AL language intelligence from AI agents and other editors, and profiling slow sessions with AI agents.
On the E-Documents side, "Exchange EDI documents" is available in public preview.
Upgrade rules for version 29
Online: New customers get version 29.0 automatically. Existing customers are notified when the update is available. Admins can schedule it for any date within the five-month update period, which ends in February 2027.
On-premises: Deployments on version 24 or earlier must upgrade to version 25 before moving to version 29.
For everyone: The base application no longer includes several objects that were marked as obsolete in earlier versions. Extensions that still depend on them need attention before the upgrade.
What this means in practice
Check your extensions now, not in February. Obsolete objects, new compiler diagnostics and test automation are all easier to handle with time to spare than at the end of the update window.
